Leslie Sweder

Jan. 30 - March 26, 2022

In the Dirt is a photographic montage inspired by the forested and unceded territory of the Ktunaxa Nation of Southern British Columbia at Empire of Dirt Residency. Documenting a performative exploration of embodiment, entanglement, and our material and physical connection to the earth, these images pose questions about human perception and the body's relationship to land and landscape as we attempt to unsettle ourselves from the hierarchical systems that entrench us.

Leslie Sweder is an interdisciplinary artist with a BA in Communication and Culture from the University of Calgary and is currently completing an MFA with Grenfell College of Art at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.

In the spirit of respect, reconciliation, and truth, we honour and acknowledge that we live, play and work upon the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

We remain ever mindful of the ongoing impact of colonization and land rights, here as well as in the multitude of indigenous communities entangled globally in the agribusiness of coffee.
